Accepting and Unpacking an Electric Wheelchair: What to Watch for on Delivery, Accessories, and First Inspection

Accepting and unpacking an electric wheelchair: What to look out for on delivery, accessories, and the first check

When an electric wheelchair is delivered, the excitement is often high. Even so, it is worth taking a little time when unpacking it. An electric wheelchair is a larger and more technically demanding product than many ordinary parcels.

A calm initial check helps identify transport damage early, check that accessories are complete, and put the wheelchair into service safely.

1. Before delivery: make space and plan for help

An electric wheelchair is usually delivered in a larger box. It is therefore a good idea to clear some space in the entrance area, hallway, or living room before it arrives.

If possible, a second person should help with unpacking. This is especially useful if the box is heavy or the wheelchair needs to be lifted out of the packaging.

It is also important to have a quiet area where the wheelchair can be checked briefly after unpacking. A level floor, enough light, and some room to move around make the first inspection much easier.

2. Briefly inspect the box before opening it

Before opening the box, take a look at the outer packaging. Small dents are not unusual with large parcels. However, if the box is badly damaged, torn open, or visibly crushed, you should take photos.

These photos can be helpful later if there are questions about the delivery. It is best to photograph the box from several sides and make sure the shipping label and damaged areas are clearly visible.

You can then open the box carefully. Use knives or scissors with great care so that the seat, cables, armrests, or other parts are not damaged.

3. Check accessories and documents are complete

After unpacking, first check whether all the important parts are included. Depending on the model, these may include the charger, user manual, controller, footrests, tools, battery, or other accessories.

It is a good idea not to put the parts away immediately, but to lay them out next to each other in an organized way. This makes it easier to see if anything is missing or unclear.

The user manual should also not be set aside right away. Especially for first use, it helps you better understand the charging port, folding mechanism, freewheel mode, and basic safety instructions.

4. Carry out a visual inspection of the electric wheelchair

Before switching on the electric wheelchair, take a moment to look it over calmly. Are the seat and backrest properly secured? Do the armrests, footrests, and wheels appear stable? Are any cables visibly damaged or loose?

The wheels should also be checked briefly. No packaging remnants, cable ties, or pieces of foam should be left around the wheel area.

If the wheelchair is foldable, test the folding mechanism slowly and without using force. It is important not to pull or push if you are unsure. In that case, read the manual first or contact customer service.

5. Check the battery and charger before the first trip

Before the first longer use, the battery should be sufficiently charged. Depending on the model, the battery can be charged directly on the wheelchair or separately.

The charging port should be clean and dry. The charging cable should fit securely, but not be forced in. Again, if something does not fit, do not push it—check first.

After charging, the wheelchair can be switched on. The display on the controller gives an initial indication of whether the power supply and controls are basically working.

6. Carry out the first test drive slowly and safely

The first ride should not be outdoors on uneven ground straight away. A quiet, level area in the home, courtyard, or garage is better.

At the beginning, drive at low speed. Driving straight, turning carefully, stopping slowly, and briefly reversing are enough for the first check.

It is important to get familiar with the joystick. Many new users move the joystick too much at first. Small, calm movements are usually more comfortable and safer.

7. Do not throw away the packaging right away

Even if everything seems fine after unpacking, do not dispose of the original packaging right away. Especially in the first few days, it can be useful to keep the box, protective materials, and accessory packaging.

If questions arise about the delivery, accessories, or a possible replacement, the packaging is often helpful. The original box can also play an important role in the event of a return or pickup.

8. If in doubt, get in touch early

If something is unclear during unpacking, a part is missing, or the wheelchair looks different than expected, you should contact customer service as early as possible.

Photos or short videos are helpful here. They often show more quickly what is meant and make it easier to provide an appropriate answer.

Conclusion: A calm first check makes for an easier start

An electric wheelchair should not be unpacked in a rush and put straight into everyday use after delivery. Anyone who calmly checks the box, accessories, battery, charger, wheels, and controls starts more safely and avoids unnecessary misunderstandings.

With a little preparation, the first use becomes much more relaxed—for the user as well as for relatives or accompanying persons.
